Arizona is the only winner in the Tim Floyd scandal
Tim Floyd resigned yesterday as head coach of USC after Yahoo Sports reported last month that he paid $1,000 to Rodney Guillory, a former O.J. Mayo associate, who helped deliver O.J. Mayo to USC.
In his resignation letter Floyd said that he no longer had full enthusiasm for the job but everyone knows that’s bogus. He has not addressed the allegations since they came out.
The loss of Floyd as coach is yet another blow to USC in what has been a disastrous off season for the program. In addition to Floyd USC lost its three best players to the NBA Draft. Taj Gibson, DeMar DeRozan, and Daniel Hackett all declared early for the draft leaving the roster depleted for next year. Also USC has lost three recruits mainly Renardo Sidney, who was a top ten recruit, but that may be a blessing in disguise since he had off the court problems and that’s the last thing USC needs.
As for the allegations and their validity they are probably true. While Mayo was at USC there were rumblings about violations but nothing ever came to surface. I mean why else would a top recruit commit to USC to play basketball when you can play for whatever college you want. For football it wouldn’t be a surprise but USC is not known as a basketball school so it was a little fishy to see him commit there. The “extra benefits” he got from USC probably pushed him over the top.
The only people who are happy right now are the officials at Arizona. They thought they had their new head coach in Floyd but he reneged on the deal at last second which lead to the hiring of Xavier coach Sean Miller. Miller has done a good job rebuilding so far nabbing some good recruits. It would have been a public relations nightmare if Floyd was the coach. Arizona would probably be looking for another coach right now but instead look like they are headed in the right direction. They got lucky unlike thier Pac 10 rivals who are in full blown rebuilding mode now not just their roster but their image as well.
