As we take a break from the recent football content (if you didn’t get the catch that will be our main focus form now on but we will still occaisly post about other sports like we are now) we update you on the latest news on horse Rachel Alexander.
At the Haskett Invitational yesterday, Rachel Alexander went up against the boys and came out victorious once again bringing her record to 2-0 against the boys.
Rachel Alexander easily won the race winning by six lengths. On a sloppy track at Monmouth Park the horse finished in 1 minute 47.21 seconds just behind the race record.
Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird came in second.

Rachel Alexander easily wins the Haskell Invitational
This was the filly’s second race since the Preakness after capturing the Mother Goose Stakes by 19 1/4 lengths.
As for Rachel Alexander’s next race as of now that information is unknown.
Owner Jess Jackson has already stated that she will not race in the upcoming Breeders Cup. But since she is training in Sarotoga there has been speculation that her next race will either be the Travers Stakes on August 29th or in the Woodward Stakes on September 5th.
The Travers Stakes would be against 3 year colts while the Woodward Stakes would be against older colts.
But the race everyone wants to see is Rachel Alexander vs. Zenyatta. Zenyatta is a five year old mare who is unbeaten in 11 starts. But there is a holdup. A race would likely occur at the Breeders Cup but James as already ruled out Rachel Alexander because of the synthetic surface. Whether a race will occur is anyones guess but if it does get done it will no doubt be the race of the year.

Let’s see. Last year it came down to the Breeder’s Cup/World Championships. Curlin flopped; Zenyatta romped to remain undefeated. Judges call this a draw and award Horse of the Year honors to Curlin. Zenyatta may not have won the Classic but, she would have beaten Curlin that day.
This year. Rachel Alexander wins the Preakness for the same connections as Curlin’s. Team Rachel Alexander immediately declares the Breeder’s Cup meaningless; cite different type of track as the reason. Judges agree.
Rachel Alexander’s team then disregards the fact that the Haskel track has come up sloppy & sealed and she romps. I thought they were being careful. Seems she does not mind the slop (which is more dangerous to a horse’s health than synthetic (especially when it is sealed).
Meanwhile back at the track, Zenyatta keeps winning; now a perfect 12 for 12; she does not have a problem with the different type of track.
Zenyatta is a very special horse and the racing press has not given her the credit she is due over the last 2+ years.
Up until the Haskel, I thought Zenyatta would beat Rachel Alexander easily because, the three year old colts this year are the worst crop I have ever seen. I do not give this filly that much credit for beating these colts. This year’s three year old colts do not beat anyone out of their own division. That a filly can beat all of them is no surprise.
The Haskel though, was her most impressive race. Rachel Alexander is improving and now I am not so sure that Zenyatta would beat her.
It is my opinion that Rachel Alexander has not beaten a single horse yet that Zenyatta could not beat. Since Zenyatta is the reigning queen and is still undefeated, it is up to Rachel Alexander to knock her off the throne. Not the other way around. If team Rachel Alexander chooses not to attend the Championship on Nov. 6th or 7th, then she should only be crowned top 3yo filly for 2009. If Zenyatta keeps winning and wins a Championship race, she should be named Horse of the Year for 2009.
i think that rachel alexander is goin to knock zenyaata off her throne and take the title philly of the year.
How do people know Zenyatta could beat the same horses as Rachael. She would have to do it to prove it. I commend Jesse Jackson for the plans for her. He has her best interests at heart. We have lost some great champions because of greed. I have trained all my life and I know my horses all came first. To heck with public opinion. If they meet up they do, if they don’t let it rest. I definetely think she seserves horse of the year. I take nothing away from Zenyatta, she is a true champion, but she has barely raced outside of California. People who are the betting public think they know a lot about horse racing but until you have laid your hands on that animal every day they know nothing. Way to go Rachael and you are the best and you are Rachael Alexandra The Great.
Dear Mr. Leverone
Looks like you need to do a litle reading before spouting off. It has been determined that they are getting more hind end injuries on the synthetic surfaces. 19 Thoroughbreds from 111 dies from castastrophic injuries in the hind end on synthetic surfaces. Now why in the world would you want to take a chance with a great filly like that and take the chance of getting her injured. I personally have never liked synthetic tracks. Thay cause a lot of problems the general public does not see or hear about. Why can’t they match up before the breeders cup if they want to race against each other. Rachael ran an excellent race in the Woodward Saturday and showed how great she is.
TO Frank Leverone:
Rachel’s Haskell is not that special either. That track gets faster when its wet. I’d be really surprise if she goes to the Woodward against older horses. She will be spot raced on another 3 year old race. One thing I notice is when Rachel races against the colts, Borel really whacks the hell out of her with the whip but when she races the fillies, Borel hand rides her. As fas as racing Zenyatta, that is a pipedream. Jackson knows that is a losing proposition. poly track or otherwise. What cracks me up is everytime Rachel wins the media goes gaga over her. How can this horse be called super duper since slice bread and then misses the biggest showcase in the sport. It just does not compute.
In the long run, the Rachel hype is badly needed by the industry!! She has generated new fans and the industry hopes she keeps winning. They should keep her in her division.
i think rachel is a good philly no matter how she is handled and she is to prove it when she bet zenyatta everyone go ga ga because rachel is a great horse
Guys, you are convienently not mentioning Z barely won her last race against fillies and mares, Rachel has beat the top of the class colts(plural) by lengths(plural). Good for you for being a Z lover, I am too, but please, it would be Rachel hands down.
And Frank, you give Rachel no credit for beating these colts? Twice? Really? Shame. Can’t even mention her racing the ladies, b/c that is always just embarrasing.
On to the Woodward!
is rachel eligibile four the kuntuky derby in 2010 ?
I have a great feeling about this little filly, she will be great, remember the amazing Sea Biscuit, she will be just as awesome, if Rachel and Zenyatta are destined
to race against each other, then it will be one hell of a race,my money though, will be on Rachel.
