How to Save the NFL

Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports thinks the NFL could fall the same way boxing did in America, even comparing Junior Seau to Muhammad Ali. To prevent that from happening, Whitlock offers some suggestions for commissioner Roger Goodell.

  • Kickoffs should be eliminated.
  • Reduce the regular season to 14 games and the preseason to two.
  • Reduce the number of full-contact practices to one per week at all levels of football.
  • The NFL should eliminate its offseason volunteer practice program.

Video: Ricky Williams on NFL Safety

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z6zWcuX5nQ

Now retired running back Ricky Williams spoke with Dan Le Batard the other day about safety in the NFL and how they are handling concussions. Williams have some questionable answers, puzzling both Le Batard and myself. The video is worth the watch. Here’s a sampling of what Williams had to say.

“I don’t buy it. I’m only speaking from my personal experience, because I haven’t allowed myself to buy it, and I haven’t been affected. Yes, I’m aware that football is a rough sport, but instead of saying, ‘Oh — I’m doomed to brain trauma,’ I said, ‘What can I do about it?’ And I just started taking care of my body. I found people, places and things that really helped me — again, I don’t know what’s going to happen to me in 10 years, but I look at the other things I’ve learned about, and the way I see the world.”

PHOTO: Get Your Free Sean Payton Wristband

New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram posted this on twitter: “Get y’all wristband game up!! #FREESEANPAYTON” and accompanied it with the photo you see above.

First came the news that the Saints are going to leave Payton’s chair empty on the team bus, plane and in team meetings. Now this. What’s next? This is getting pathetic.

Nick Mangold Gets His Chest Waxed on Jimmy Fallon (Photos and Videos)

New York Jets center Nick Mangold was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon yesterday and participated in the “Wax On, Wax Off” segment, where he preceded to get all of his chest hair waxed. Check out some videos of it below:

As funny as it is, it would have been even better if they got Mangold’s sister Holly instead.

Does the New York Media have a Love Affair with Tim Tebow and Vendetta Against Mark Sanchez?

Uh oh… I’m starting to see a pattern here.  There is a love affair with Tim Tebow.  But wait Erik, we already knew that, that’s why everyone is Tebowing and he’s the most popular player in the NFL you say….

No, I’m talking about the New York Media, at least for one beat writer.  Manish Mehta put out an article yesterday quoting Jets’ QB coach Matt Cavanaugh being critical of Mark Sanchez and saying that he is to blame for some of the Jets failures last year.

Today, an article about the same coach and same writer, Mehta talk about Tebow and how the coach is “pleasantly surprised” on his throwing mechanics.  It’s almost like the media WANTS a QB controversy so badly!  Now I’m not saying that Manish is making this story up, but you must take into consideration the way the article is written, which story gets released first (as one interview was most likely  have taken place), the words used in the headlines and the way the information is presented to the fans.

As they say “Let’s go to the video tape” er uh, the web:

Exhibit A:  The headlines.  They speak for themselves.

Mark Sanchez’s turnovers come from ‘poor decision- making’, NY Jets QB coach Matt Cavanaugh says
Tim Tebow continues to impress NY Jets coaches at quarterback position with progress and tireless work ethic

Chad Ochocinco Letter to Roger Goodell

Dear Dad, I know it has been a rough week, so I wanted to reach out. Players dying, players suing and on top of that my peers are just going off on you in the media. It does not help that ESPN has all of a sudden become Medical TV with damn near every brain expert on the planet. This has got to be the worst week ever. Since no one is showing any support, I figured I would be the first. You are in one big ass catch 22 and quite frankly, I am not sure there is any solution. One thing I think can help is killing the NFL PR machine. Y'all do a darn near perfect job at portraying this game as one played by heroes. But let's be real dad. This is a nasty, dirty and violent game with consequences. Sign up or go get a regular job. Watch it or turn off the TV and go fishing with your kids. It is really that simple. I know there are probably legal and financial implications that prevent this blunt depiction, but am not sure if you have a choice. If you don't say it now, the mounting evidence being revealed publicly will say it for you very soon. In all, I love you and if anyone can lead us out of this mess, it will be you. Oh by the way, I have a deal for you. Am having a rebound year and plan to do a lot of celebrating in the end zone. Can my fine money go to supporting ex-players suffering? Sincerely, Chad

Chad Ochocinco

Chad Ochocinco wrote a letter to Roger Goodell on his peronsal website, pledging his support to the NFL commissioner in light of recent debate over the safety of the game.

He prefaced the letter with this:
Many of you know I have a father son relationship with Roger Goodell. I love him and just had to reach out to him with all that is going on. We are at a crucial point in the history of football. The foundation of the game is in jeopardy based on all these factors and the future of the game is going to be shaped by him.
