SEC Championship Preview

The NCAA football schedule  hits Week 12 and already attention is focused on the SEC Championship  game, to be played a couple of weeks from now. It will, barring a complete  disaster, be a matchup between the #1 Florida Gators and the #2 Alabama  Crimson Tide. This online sportsbook currently  has the Gators as the odds-on favorite to win the SEC at 5/9, with Alabama  sporting odds of 7/5.

The BCS’ Top 5 teams remain  unchanged from the week previous with the Gators at the top, the Tide  No. 2 and the Texas Longhorns, TCU Horned Frogs and Cincinnati Bearcats  rounding out the Top 5 in that order.

Florida hasn’t deviated from  top spot since the BCS rankings first came out a little over a month  ago and with two more easy games before the conference championship,  there is no reason why the Gators shouldn’t remain at the top of the  BCS rankings heading into the big game.

This week, Florida has a tilt  against the Florida International Golden Panthers…this should be a  blowout. It is one of the biggest pointspread margins of the season, with sportsbook listing the Gators as 43-point favorites.

Florida is currently riding  an 11-game straight up winning streak. They have recorded a mark of  9-5-1 ATS the last 15 times they’ve been listed as a favorite of 8  points or more, but they’re only 2-5-1 ATS in the last eight in that  spread range. Although 43 points is a wild spread to ask a team to cover.

Sports bettors are still enamored  with the #1 team in the nation, as 74% of all the betting volume on  this is laying the 43 points.

A quick note on the Total in  this one: the last eight times the Gators have been favored by eight  points or more, they have a mark of 1 Over, 6 Unders and 1 Push.

The Gators should be able to  get by FSU the week after when the cross-state rivals meet.

Since 1995, Florida is 5-2  ATS in seven home games against the Seminoles.

All signs point to the Gators  being undefeated going into the early-December SEC title match against  Alabama.

With the exception of a blip  in early-November, Alabama has been a constant in the BCS’ two-spot  this season.

The Tide also have a powder-puff  game this coming week against Chattanooga, but looking ahead, there  could have trouble vs. the Auburn Tigers during Thanksgiving weekend.

‘Bama has struggled in its  last eight games against Auburn, going 2-6 SU (these two have recorded  2 Overs and 6 Unders in those games).

In the Tide’s last seven  road games against the Tigers however, they may be 2-5 SU but are 5-2  ATS.

Alabama has been a great road  team in its last nine overall away games, going 8-1 SU and an impressive  8-1 ATS.

This much-anticipated SEC Championship  matchup in a couple of weeks will be the biggest game of the year so  far in college football.

Good luck this weekend.

NBA Draft Decisions: Should I stay or Should I go?

The deadline to withdraw from the NBA Draft was yesterday and some prospects including Jodie Meeks, Luke Harangody, and Greivis Vasquez didn’t make their decisions until the final moments.  In this article I’m going to discuss and analyze the decisions made by some prospects.

Scotty Reynolds, G, Villanova- Return to Villanova
Reynolds decided to return to Villanova for his senior season.  The Wildcats made the Final Four last year and will try to repeat this season with a stacked recruiting class.  Reynolds though, hasn’t improved much since his freshman year and his stock was high as it was ever going to be after his clutch shot against Pittsburgh.  With incoming freshman Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns set to steal playing time from Renyolds this doesn’t like the right decision.

Harangody will return to Notre Dame as the Irish try to rebound from last years dissapointing season

Harangody will return to Notre Dame as the Irish try to rebound from last years dissapointing season

Luke Harangody, PF, Notre Dame- Return to Notre Dame
Harangody waited until the final day to decide to come back to Notre Dame for his senior season.  Harangody was a likely second round pick in this years draft if he stayed in.   Harangody will return to Notre Dame and try to make up for a poor seaosn which saw the Irish miss the tournament.  Also by coming back Harangody will break many Notre Dame school records making him go down as one for the best to ever play at Notre Dame.  His draft status probably won’t change much but the allure of the records and fame make it worth going back for Harangody.

Jeff Teague, PG, Wake Forest- Stay
Teague waited until the last minute to decide whether or not to stay in but it seemed like a forgone conclusion he would stay in from the start.  Teague had a great start to the season but tailed off a little at the end including a dreadful performance in the NCAA Tournament against Cleveland State but his stock is still solid.  Teague should go somewhere from the mid first round to the early 20’s in the draft.  A shooting guard in a point guard’s body Teague will need to work on his decision making skills in the NBA to be an effective point guard.

Floyd resigns amid Controversy

floyd

Arizona is the only winner in the Tim Floyd scandal

Tim Floyd resigned yesterday as head coach of USC after Yahoo Sports reported last month that he paid $1,000 to Rodney Guillory, a former O.J. Mayo associate, who helped deliver O.J. Mayo to USC.

In his resignation letter Floyd said that he no longer had full enthusiasm for the job but everyone knows that’s bogus.  He has not addressed the allegations since they came out.

The loss of Floyd as coach is yet another blow to USC in what has been a disastrous off season for the program.  In addition to Floyd USC lost its three best players to the NBA Draft.  Taj Gibson, DeMar DeRozan, and Daniel Hackett all declared early for the draft leaving the roster depleted for next year.  Also USC has lost three recruits mainly Renardo Sidney, who was a top ten recruit, but that may be a blessing in disguise since he had off the court problems and that’s the last thing USC needs.

Way to early Pre-Season Top 10

It’s never too early for some college basketball.  With all the big recruits signed I figured I’d put out an early look of the preseason top 10.

10. Butler Bulldogs

The Bulldogs return all five starters from a team that was an 8 seed but lost in the first round of the tournament.  Matt Howard and Gordan Hayward give them a great 1-2 scoring punch.  The Bulldogs will be the heavy favorites in the Horizon league and should go farther in the tournament with another year of experience.

9. West Virginia Mountaineers

West Virginia had a disappointing end to last season getting upset by Dayton in the first round of the tournament.  They only lose Alex Ruoff who was a great shooter.  Devin Ebanks had a great freshman season and should build on it.  The losses of the other Big East teams (Pitt, Louisville, UCONN, Cuse) will also make things easier for West Virginia.

Cuse Comeback Late and Win Title

The Syracuse Orange Men’s Lacrosse Team rallied late and came back to beat Cornell 10-9 in OT.  The title in the second strait and 11th overall for Syracuse, the most of any team.  The Orange rallied from down three late to tie the game with 4.5 seconds left before winning 80 seconds into overtime.

Cornell had the ball late but failed to clear the ball and ended up turning it over.  Cuse recovered the loose ball and passes it to Matt Abbot who found Kevin Nims in front of the net and put it home but only after the ball bounced of the top of the stick of a Cornell player.  In overtime Cody Jamison scored the winner off a pass from Dan Hardy and the celebration begun with dog piles on the field.

Wall Chooses Kentucky

Top recruit John Wall is headed to Kentucky.  Wall, the top point guard and a top five overall recruit, had also been considering Duke, Florida, and Miami.  Wall is the last of the big recruits to sign ending a lengthy process that still had eight teams in it as of April.  Wall stands 6-4, hails from Raleigh, North Carolina and played for Word of God Christian Academy.  He had nearly committed to Memphis but reneged when Memphis coach John Calipari left for Kentucky.  Wall’s advisor and former AAU coach Brian Clifton was pushing Wall to sign with Duke but Wall wanted to go to Kentucky.  Wall said that his relationship with coach Calipari  was “the thing that pushed Kentucky over.”

Kentucky has the nations top rated recruiting class according to Rivals before they signed Wall.  Calipari inherited a good class from Billy Gillespie and added to that when he took over last month bringing five star big man DeMarcus Cousins from Memphis and got five star point guard Eric Bledsoe to commit to Kentucky.  Adding Wall to this class which in addition to Cousins and Bledsoe includes five star big man Daniel Orton, guard John Hood, and junior college forward Darnell Dodson elevates this class to one of the best in the past decade and perhaps better.   Wall will likely follow in the footsteps of past Calipari point guards Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans and go one and done at the college level.  He is considered a top prospect for the 2010 NBA Draft and a has a legitimate chance to be the number one pick.

With the recruiting class Calipari had brought in Kentucky has gone from missing the tournament this past season to a likely preseason top five ranking.  In addition to the recruits Kentucky received good news when Patrick Patterson withdrew from the NBA Draft to come back to Kentucky for another season.  If Jodie Meeks withdraws as well Kentucky will more than likely be the favorite to cut down the nets next year in Indianapolis.

Paulus Goes Orange

After a four your career at Duke playing point guard Greg Paulus has decided to extend his collegiate career and will play this upcoming season for the Syracuse football team.  Paulus will enroll as a graduate student at Syracuse which will grant him a fifth year of eligibility.  Paulus was a star quarterback in high school winning the Gatorade National Player of the year as a senior and received a scholarship from Notre Dame to play football but turned it down to go to Duke.  Paulus grew up less than 10 minutes away from Syracuse and coming back home was the deciding factor when deciding between Syracuse and Nebraska.  Paulus also garnered interest from Michigan and had a tryout with the Green Bay Packers but nothing came out of it.  He will compete with red shirt freshman Ryan Nassib for the starting quarterback job.  Paulus though, has not played football since his days at Christian Brothers Academy and will take time to make the transition back to football.
