Training Camp Injury Bug

Training Camps are starting to head into full gear now and with that comes the unfortunate but unavoidable injury bug.

In the past two days alone 3 starters went down with season ending injuries.

It doesn’t get much worse than losing a valued member of the team just as the summer starts and in some cases before full pads are even on.

For the Eagles, Panthers, and Bengals who were the teams to suffer these injuries and now have to deal with them we feel your pain.

Kemoeatu (torn Achilles tendon) was one of three players to suffer season ending injuries recently

Let’s start with Stewart Bradley, middle linebacker of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bradley tor his ACL in practice on Sunday but actually walked off the field under his own power but the injury proved to be much more serious.

Bradley led the Eagles in tackles last season in only his first year as a starter.  Many expected a breakout season from Bradley but that will have to wait a year.  He wore the defensive headset and his leadership will be missed.

The Eagles will replace him with Omar Gaither, who actually started in the middle in 2007 but is not the same caliber player that Bradley is.  The Eagles also just signed former Chargers linebacker Matt Wilhelm for depth.

Six Teams that could miss the Playoffs in '09

Every year in the NFL typically half of the teams that made it to the playoffs the previous season don’t make it back the next year. In 2008 seven out of the twelve teams that didn’t make the playoffs the previous season including only one returning team in the NFC (Giants). Today I’ll predict which six teams won’t be making a return to the playoffs.

Yesterday I predicted which teams have the best chance of making the playoffs that didn’t this past season. You can check it out here.

Arizona Cardinals- The Cardinals are coming off a Super Bowl appearance but that is a little misleading. The Cardinals were 9-7 in an extremely weak division and were awful down the stretch losing four of their last six games. They caught fire at the right time but they don’t have elite talent. If the 49ers put it together or the Seahawks stay healthy the Cardinals could be in trouble. The Cardinals also lost offensive coordinator Todd Haley and could still en up trading Anquan Boldin.

Panthers Draft Review

Carolina Panthers
Picks: DE Everette Brown, CB Sherrod Martin, DT Corvey Irvin, RB Mike Goodson, FB Tony Fiammetta, G Duke Robinson, CB Captain Munnerlyn

The Panthers had a remarkable season last year earning a fist round bye in the playoffs but were bounced unceremoniously by the Cardinals in the second round.  The Panthers had no first round pick this year due to a trade they made in last years draft to acquire Jeff Otah, who started all 16 games at right tackle for the Panthers last year.  The Panthers followed in last year suite trading away next year’s first round pick to acquire Everette Brown, a defensive end from Florida State, in the second round.  Brown, a pure pass rushing specialist, should provide insurance behind Julius Peppers who has yet to sign his franchise tender and has requested a trade.  With their other second round pick they took defensive back Sherrod Martin from Troy.   Martin can help out at both cornerback and safety and hails from the same program that 2008 first round pick Leodis McKlevin hails from.  Corvey Irvin, who they selected in the third round, was an ok pick who went a little higher that most expects expected.  Mike Goodson could develop into a nice third down running back but won’t see much playing time in Carolina’s loaded backfield.  Tony Fiammetta was the first fullback off the board and should develop into a nice lead blocker.  Duke Robinson was a steal in the fifth round when most expects had him pegged in the second round but you have to wonder if there was a reason he fell so far.  Carolina put together a decent class but gave up a lot to acquire Brown who has a high bust factor and may not play for awhile.
