Vince Young to Sign 1-Year Deal with the Philadelphia Eagles

UPDATE: Good call, Mr. Judge. Vince Young and the Philadelphia Eagles have reached an agreement on a one-year contract, NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports. He will sign on the dotted line on Friday.

Mere hours after Philly shipped one quarterback off to the desert, they appear to be on the verge of adding another.

According to Clark Judge of CBSSports.com, the Eagles are “expected” to bring aboard Vince Young as the backup to Michael Vick. Although not official, Judge calls it “a virtual certainty” that Young will become the team’s No. 2 signal-caller.

If the deal does come to fruition, Young wouldn’t have been out of a job for long — he was formally released by the Titans earlier in the day.

While Young has his detractors — like any other player in the NFL — this would be one of the more ideal landing spots for someone who’s trying to rebuild his image and career.

VY was also rumored to be interested in signing with the Dolphins, but they’ve apparently put him on the backburner while they attempt to acquire the Broncos’ Kyle Orton.

The former two-time Pro Bowler will sit behind Vick, ready to be called upon should the situation arise. With Vick’s penchant for injury, there’s a decent chance he may have to indeed step in and lead the Eagles’ offense. There’s just no telling how Young, who seems mentally fragile, responds to a more hostile environment, despite being surrounded with more talent.

Can You Feel That? Vince Young Makes Jeff Fisher a Winner

[picappgallerysingle id="7160533"]

Just over a month ago, Tennessee Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher made headlines by wearing a Colts jersey to a charity event. As he revealed Peyton Manning’s familiar #18 across his chest, Fisher declared to the receptive crowd, “I just wanted to feel like a winner.”

At the time the Titans were 0-6 and unquestionably the biggest disappointment in the League. The following week, at the urging of team owner Bud Adams, Fisher made a switch to his starting lineup, reinstating former-quarterback-of-the-future Vince Young behind center. It was a move many interpreted as a waving-of-the-white-flag by Fisher, forfeiting hope on a season that began with Super Bowl aspirations.

Since the switch, the Titans have won five straight.

Of the five wins, none has been more impressive than Sundays against the Cardinals. Laugh as you may at the Cardinals history of ineptitude or the less-than-intimidating looking bird on their helmets, they are still the defending NFC Champs, boast a 7-4 record, and are the safe bet to win their division for the second consecutive season. Never mind that that division is the woeful NFC North… the Cards are, for all intents and purposes, a contender.

So when Cardinals LaRod Stephens-Howling downed a punt at the 1 yard line with 2:37 remaining and the Titans in a four-point deficit, Jeff Fisher probably wasn’t feeling too good. It seemed a safe assumption Coach Fisher would go home that night, throw his Peyton Manning jersey on his back, stand in front of his bedroom mirror and pretend to be a winner, because there was no way the Titans were leaving that game victorious.

If You Want to Win, Put Vince In

Sitting at 0-3 the Titans are in a very precarious spot.  They are three games behind the division leading Colts and their playoff hopes are fading fast.  Only six teams in history have made the playoffs since starting 0-3, the last team being the 1998 Bills.  They have lost all three of their games by seven points or less so they’re clearly not in the same league as some of the other 0-3 teams like the Browns and Chiefs. But good teams find ways to win close games and they need to start now if they want to be a contender.

It's time to get Vince off the sidelines.

It's time to get Vince off the sidelines.

Dating back to last season they have lost five games in a row and have a 3-7 record since starting last season at 10-0.  This Titans team needs a spark, and that spark is Vince Young.

Now Fisher has had Collins back as he has said he will not replace him as the starter now or anytime soon.  Fisher said “Kerry is not the reason. He is certainly not the reason for the situation we’re in.”

While I agree with Fisher that Collins isn’t the main reason the Titans are where they are now however, the Titans are a different team from last year.  They lost Albert Haynesworth and while their run defense is around the same, where they miss him is in the pressuring the quarterback.  Albert would push offensive lineman back into the backfield and not allow the quarterback to step up in the pocket and make throws.  Without a consistent pass rush it has put more pressure on their secondary, which hasn’t stepped up.

Despite sporting two pro bowlers in Cortland Finnegan and Michael Griffin, the secondary is playing terrible.  They have been torched, averaging 275 yards allowed through the air and have given up 11 plays of over 20 yards, both ranking in the bottom three in the league.  To make matters worst they just lost Vincent Fuller for 4-6 weeks and it will force rookie Ryan Mouton into the lineup and by judging by his special teams performance on Sunday (2 lost fumbles)  it doesn’t look pretty.

Back to Collins. He was a good fit for last year’s Titans, a team that played great defense and controlled the clock only needing Collins to manage the game.  With their defensive woes this season they need some more fire power in the offense and that’s what Vince Young can bring.  We seem to forget that Vince Young was offensive rookie of the year and actually went to the Pro Bowl that year.  Putting him and Chris Johnson in the same backfield gives them the fastest and most dangerous backfield in the league.
